T-shirt quilts are a great memory for your child or yourself!
What good do your old t-shirts do you in a box in the attic? Let me make those college shirts, baseball shirts, or shirts you’ve collected in 5ks and marathons into a quilt you can use or display.
The cost of T-shirt quilts depends on their complexity and the number of shirts used. A good way to estimate is to allow about $20 per shirt used, which includes labor and additional materials. So, a quilt using 12 shirts such as the one below that says Fisher Field Hockey would cost around $240 plus tax. The finished size would be about 58 X 74 inches, depending on the size of the motifs. It isn’t an exact science because everyone’s pile of shirts is slightly different.
T-Shirt Quilts
Sometimes there is a motif on both the front and the back of a shirt that you might want used. Some are large and some are small. I can piece smaller ones together to make blocks for the quilt (such as the lowest block in the middle of the Fisher quilt to the right). So when you are calculating how many “shirts” you are using, be sure to factor in fronts and backs individually. I can email pictures back and forth with layouts and we can come up with a design that will make you happy.
Memory Quilts
I have made quilts from many interesting materials. One of the quilts in the slide show below was made for a skeet-shooting enthusiast. He loads his own shotgun shells, and I was able to incorporate t-shirts from skeet-shooting tournaments with the canvas bags that contained shotgun shell loading components. I’ve also made quilts with hockey and baseball jerseys, pajamas, and lots of other fun materials.
Another of the quilts in the slide show was made for a high-school student, using t-shirts from shows he had been to on Broadway, along with shirts from his own high school productions. In the corners there are pictures of him which were printed on fabric, and all around are copies of Playbills printed on fabric. It was a wonderful memory for his years of Broadway attendance and high school theater performance.
